During the early and mid 19th century Lancashire was the most predominant producer of whisky in the country thanks to the local invention called the Coffey Still. This enabled whisky to be produced on a grand scale within the county, while other distilleries particulary in Scotland struggled with their old fashioned pot stills.
Today there is only one whisky producer left in Lancashire, Standish based Lancashire Whisky Producers Ltd., established in 1991, which has recently been purchased by the new Lancashire owner, the Fulford-Brown family. It's main product is the aptly named 'Red Rose Whisky' which was introduced in 1991 and has proved very popular over the years.
